What is a Community?

We recently posted an innocent looking piece of fan art on Facebook that was created by one of our community members. The image playfully mashed up the themes of Mass Effect and My Little Pony, depicting the Pinkie Pie character in N7 armor. We thought it was hilarious and wanted to let the rest of our community in on the fun. Those of you that had front row seats during the aftermath know that’s not exactly what happened.

Even though the image was posted in jest, it raised the ire of a portion of our Facebook community. Some fans felt compelled to “unlike” our page, while others even went as far as to post their intention to “sell all their Mass Effect games.”

It got me thinking: What exactly is a social media community, and what is its true purpose?

It is my belief that the purpose of a social media community is to create a place where people from all over the world can gather, linked by their shared affection of a particular passion. It sounds almost Utopian, doesn’t it? A little corner of the internet reserved just for us where we can go and interact with like-minded fans.

At BioWare, we think of our fans as our extended family, and as within any family, there are bound to be times when we won’t always see eye-to-eye. Sometimes Uncle Jay is going to root against your favorite sports team. Sometimes cousin Sue is going to wear socks with sandals. And sometimes, just sometimes, we’re going to post pictures of little pink ponies sworn to protect the galaxy from Reapers.

We support our community’s desire to be creative and share with us. Our talented fans send us all types of content, from painstakingly detailed fan art and cosplay photos to music and poetry inspired by our games. We try to showcase as many of them as we can, and hope that the community will find it all as fascinating as we do.

We strive to provide a community that offers a little something for everyone, and as such, new content is always being gathered for future posts. We take the work that we do very seriously, but we also believe that a good sense of humor is healthy. Doesn’t everyone enjoy a good laugh?

If you don’t enjoy a particular post, that’s okay. You can’t please everyone, as they say. However, rather than become hostile and turn against the community, we have an alternate suggestion: Create something better. Instead of raving about what you don’t like, show us an example of something that appeals to you.

Remember, it’s your feedback that helps to shape the community, but you’re always going to catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Be good to one another.

Dragon Age Question of the Month (Collector’s Item)

Last month, we kicked off our monthly Dragon Age question with a discussion of lore and story details you are interested in learning more about. Thanks again to everyone who contributed in the weeklong conversation – the community team combed through the forum thread and discovered some interesting specifics. Almost a quarter of respondents mentioned they would love to know more about Tevinter, with an equal amount curious about the fate of Morrigan. The fourth most discussed character was Sten, and unsurprisingly many would love to know more about Qunari culture.

We’ll return to more questions about the Dragon Age Universe, story, and gameplay down the road. This month, however, we’re interested in something a little more tangible. Developers routinely offer a high-end physical collectible in special editions of their games. This can range from a statue you might display on your shelf, a cloth map, or art book to name a few.

If you wanted to own a piece of Dragon Age history in a collector’s edition of a future hypothetical title, what item (or kind of item) would you most treasure?

We recognize that not everyone has dragon-like inclinations to hoard pieces of treasure, so if you’re not interested in collector’s pieces, there’s always next month’s question!

Let us know what high-end physical item you would most like in a collector’s edition here!

Primarch address preps turians for war
By Chisilix Palanurus

CIPRITINE, PALAVEN – The Turian Hierarchy is at war with an unknown force of artificial intelligences, Palaven’s Primarch Fedorian revealed today in a brief address carried throughout Citadel space. The speech came just hours after comm buoys went dark near Mactare, a star system home to the battered turian colony world of Taetrus.

Rumors suggesting the attackers were the same insect-like ships that attacked batarian and human space were confirmed by the Primarch. “The attackers are called Reapers. They are a race of intelligent starships that can turn their prisoners into willing slaves,” he said.

Fedorian did little to acknowledge fears that the enemy must have superior technology in order to coordinate two fronts thousands of light years apart. “There are many mysteries about this enemy, but we know enough,” he said. “They have attacked our kin and so it is war with them. War until victory. War however long and hard the road may be. War until they can never threaten us again.”

Turian response to the Primarch’s statement was vociferous. Several inter-and-extranet outages were reported following the speech, as turians vented their anger at the enemy. Primarch Fedorian seemed to have predicted this emotional response in his address, though it remains to be seen if he can contain it. “Now is not the time to be enraged,” he said. “Now is the time to harness our will and do what must be done. We must show that whatever civilization we face, it picked the wrong foe.”

Flood of batarian traffic brings rumors of war
By Shirin Kazemi

UTOPIA SYSTEM – A massive influx of batarian ships is raising tensions in the Exodus Cluster, putting Alliance forces on high alert. According to Alliance officials, the ships came from the batarian-held Harsa relay with minimal warning, some barreling right through. The Alliance reportedly fired on some of the ships with the intent to disable them.

“It’s a miracle any of them are still alive,” one human frigate captain said. According to the batarians, they are neither invaders nor defectors, but refugees. They claim a hostile species has attacked the Hegemony’s fleet, bombarding Khar’shan and other batarian planets.

With the Harsa comm buoy system crippled, communication is sporadic at best between far-flung batarians and their government on Khar’shan. Some refugees claim the attackers were Council. Others blame the geth or even the rachni. All report that the enemy, in whatever form, is blockading the relay, destroying most spacecraft trying to make it through. The refugees are not solely civilians. Hegemony Commander, Eruz Mathat, who is under guard while his cruiser is inspected, was blunt in his assessment of the situation. “I never thought I would say this to the human navy,” he said, “but we need you.”

Demo Live Today + Interview with Billy Buskell and Corey Gaspur!

Today is a HUGE day for Mass Effect 3 fans! Our demo has arrived and can be downloaded to play. No offense to any star-crossed lovers, but I’d say there’s no better way to spend Valentine’s Day than at home with your PC/Xbox/PS3. Maybe pair it with a nice box of chocolates… All of us at BioWare are huge fans of the multiplayer mode in ME3 so you never know when you’ll run into one of us on your squad!

Fans of The Walking Dead will also be in for a treat this Sunday when our big Digic CG trailer “Take Earth Back” will premiere. It’s 90 seconds long, so it’s pretty much going to dominate that commercial break. Watch the video above for a 15 second preview!

Yesterday, we were all set for a live Q&A with combat designer Corey Gaspur and producer Billy Buskell but encountered issues with Livestream that prevented the event. In its place, I asked fans on Twitter to send us questions about multiplayer for our devs to answer. Check out their answers after the cut…
