Fine quote. :) I always think even if you think you are completely stuck there is some tiny, tiny spark of an idea somewhere in your head. Looking for inspiration in a variety of sources will just bring that out even if you are at first doubtful. Trust your instincts. A tired phrase but one that has power. You don't need to know everything all at once- trust that the solution will present itself if you let yourself look around.

Semi-random, but this quote was on my ig page and it made me think of our conversation (and laugh) so I thought I'd share it:

"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club."

I actually usually use art. Mainly because I've always enjoyed doing portraits, so it's fun to do ones from my head. Though I usually use other people's art the same way you do photos. (I do occasionally use photos this way too, but for whatever reason paintings grab my attention more.)

Is it really name dropping when you work together?? --Now if I said it it'd be name-dropping. (And, incidentally, a lie, since I've never even met him in person. ;p)

I feel the same way about art people use, tastes vary so widely and some people will look for something that matches the feel of the game(to them) while others will use anything they think looks cool or like the idea of their character. Etc.

I was trying to recall when the use of photos began with my gaming friends. I think it has been around for a while but off and on. I recall David Gaider running a Firefly game a few years ago (watch me name drop) and we all ended up finding pictures for our characters. I believe that is where I got into the habit. I take it a little further as I love having the photo page around for reference. For example maybe that bird scupture is one of Thaddius' spying devices. Who knows.

Not everyone uses photos but it is fun to see what people come up with if they do.

Nice write up. I like how you make an interesting little character page. I've had people snub the idea of using a picture to represent a character at me, glad to see I'm not the only one who likes the idea.
